Town of Possum Creek

In the early 1800s, Raleigh didn’t have the “urban sprawl” it has now and small towns were popping up everywhere. Not far from downtown Raleigh there was a tiny crossroads called Possum Creek where a prominent family decided to settle down and build a magnificent Manor. The Town of Possum Creek grew from the land surrounding Possum Creek Manor. The founding family lived on the property for decades; minding their own business, sticking close to themselves, and becoming more and more reclusive as the town grew up around them. The most notable were Ma, Pa, Evelyn, their daughter, and Ezra, Evelyn's fiancé. They were affectionately known by the community as “The Hillbillies”. Although the family lived there for generations, no one’s quite sure what happened to them....

Some rumors claim Ma Hillbilly lost her mind, chopped up the family, and fed them to the rats that run rampant on the property. Others claim to have seen strange creatures down near the creek, but only during the cool months of the year. And best yet, some folks say the family is still hiding in the woods and the hidden passages of the Manor. They claim the family mutated due to generations of inbreeding and no longer wants to leave the property.

Any way you look at it, no one has confirmed human life on the property since the 1940s. Over the past two decades people have wandered down to Possum Creek from time to time come back with strange stories of swamp monsters, live scarecrows and hearing painful moans begging for help.

While the original homestead fell into disrepair, the Town of Possum Creek continued to grow with Raleigh eventually surrounding it. The town has always prided their self sufficiency. They have their own water and sewer system, parks, hospital, and all the other municipal facilities you would expect a town to have. In the old days they even had their own Sanitarium. In the 1960s the building was shuttered with all the equipment inside when locking away the handicapped became taboo and it was no longer profitable.

Even with all its shaded history, the Town of Possum Creek is still a great place to raise a family. Just remember no to go down to the old creek on a cold fall night. You might get more then you bargain for.

Terror at Possum Creek: Power Outage (2011)

In 2011 the weather has been highly unpredictable. Severe storms are expected to hit Possum Creek during the end of October. As a result, you can expect damage to the power grid and blackouts throughout the community. An emergency shelter has been set up at the local school. If you get caught in the storm, make your way to the shelter, where you SHOULD be safe.

Terror at Possum Creek: No Vacancy (2009)

It took two years, but the town finally managed to sell the old Manor property. An out of town investment group chose the site for their new all inclusive family spa and resort. It has everything; luxurious guest suites, a spa, boat and bike rentals, and they even have on site Putt-Putt.

One of the biggest selling points for the investment group was the ability to annex the nearby abandoned Sanitarium for additional land and guest suites. The investors were not deterred by the locals’ warnings about the haunted happenings down by Possum Creek or questions about the real reason for shuttering the sanitarium so quickly that they didn’t even remove the equipment.

Did the developers make a deadly mistake? Are the guest at their new resort going to be tormented by the spirits believed to roam the Manor property? Is it really wise to reopen the sanitarium after all these years? Why was it really closed in the first place? Will the annexation open up a whole new world of mischief and mayhem to the demented beings that lived on the old family homestead?

So many questions with so few answers but I guess as the nights get cold again we will have our answer.....

Terror at Possum Creek: The Penitentiary (2008)

After the outbreak of 2007, and closing of the hospital, the Mayor of Possum Creek was anxious to find a new source of income for his small community. As a result he made a deal with the state to build a Penitentiary. The intent was to use the new state of the art penitentiary to house some of the state’s most viscous criminals, as well as, those who went insane as a result of Possum Creek Fever.

The deal included incentives for completing the new penitentiary within a year. The incentives increased exponentially with each day the Penitentiary opened early. Possum Creek Penitentiary opened in 11 months and 2 weeks resulting in a windfall for the Mayor. However, the community was concerned that in the rush to complete it Penitentiary early, the Mayer played Russian roulette with safety.

It was not long before the concerns proved justified. Within hours of opening, the penitentiary was overrun by the prisoners and the warden was killed. It took days to bring the prison back under control and in the confusion several of the criminals escaped and remain on the run today.

Outbreak at Possum Creek (2007)

In 2007 an outbreak of Possum Creek Fever (PCF) pushed the hospital staff to their limits. The outbreak was contained but not before a large portion of the community and hospital staff had become infected. Possum Creek broke with tradition and reached out for help from their surrounding communities. They asked for volunteers to keep their hospital up and running until new staff could be hired.

Although the outbreak had been brought under control, volunteers still entered the area at your own risk. The disease spread through physical contact and mutated as it ravaged the community. Symptoms of Possum Creek Fever were high fever, mental instability, large sores, skin peeling off and in some cases death. Luckily by the end of 2007 PCF had been eradicated. Unfortunately the hospital had to be closed due to contamination, and Possum Creek was left looking for ways to manage the new population of citizens permanently disfigured and legally labeled as criminally insane due to the outbreak.

Possum Creek Manor (2006)

Over the years the founding family disappeared from the public’s eye. When no verifiable kin could be located, the ownership of original Possum Creek Manor defaulted to the Town of Possum Creek. In 2006, budget crunches and urban redevelopment in Raleigh lead the town to put the original homestead property up for sale in a silent auction.

Thousands of people toured the property which includes the manor, gardens, swamp, hunting cabins and barn but no one would put a bid in on the property. When asked why they did not want the property they echoed the stories of mysterious sightings that had been surfacing for years.

It was a disappointing end to a valiant effort by the community to profit off of the largest area of primarily undeveloped land in the town of Possum Creek. As a result of the auction, the property remained empty and the stories of ghostly and dastardly creatures haunting the property appear to have been verified.
